William Tyler, III Obituary

William Gurdon Tyler, III, 84, a resident of Gibson Island, Maryland for the past 14 years and formerly of Virginia, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 23, 2023 at his home. 

Dr. Tyler was born January 5, 1939 in Baltimore, MD to the late William, Jr. and Kathryn MacTaggart .His early education was at the Mcdonogh School. “Bill” then completed his undergraduate studies at Dickinson College, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, after which he served as an Officer in the US Army. Dr. Tyler earned  his PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and won a post-doctoral scholarship from the Latin American Teaching Fellowship Program. This permitted him to gain teaching experience in Brazil, where he met his wife of 54 years and an enchantment with all things Brazilian.

Upon his return Dr. Tyler became a Professor of economics at the University of Florida.  He then was employed as a Senior Economist at the World Bank until his retirement in 2001. In his retirement, he taught as a Professor at the Rio de Janeiro University. He was a world traveler for business and pleasure. He was a member of the Gibson Island Club since 1996. In addition, Bill was an avid sailor which in part attracted him to live on the island.

Mr. Tyler is survived by his  loving wife, Etelvina Tyler; children, David Contreiras Tyler (Carrie Ann Tyler), Elena Tyler Carr (Cameron John Carr); sister, Sarah "Sally" Tyler Bucknell and grandchildren, Daniela Seveska Tyler and Alexa Seveska Tyler. 

A service will be held at a later date at St. Christopher by the Sea on Gibson Island.
