Robert "Bob" Hatfield Obituary

Robert Lee Hatfield, age 85, crossed over to God’s hands May 28, 2023, following a lengthy illness. Bob’s strong, outgoing spirit prevailed to the very end.

Bob was born November 12, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland to Marie Joan and Robert Ira Hatfield. Bob was a humble, kind, overly generous soul; he was a true patriot and defender of the Constitution and was devoted to his family. After graduation from Howard High, Bob proudly and honorably served in the US Navy as an avionics electrician. Following his military service, he started his family and began working as an electrician at Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point, retiring after 30 years. Bob was raised in the Catholic faith and attended St. Augustine’s in Elkridge and later St. Rose of Lima in Brooklyn.

An avid reader, Bob had an affinity for Baltimore history, and lived many of the stories he told. He often contributed personally-derived information for the writing of news articles, particularly on environmental issues and the Chesapeake Bay. Affectionately known as “Bob from Brooklyn,” he loved to talk, and was a frequent caller to WBAL’s morning radio show. His hobbies included classic cars, fishing, horseracing, geology and spending time with family, friends and beloved pets. You could often find Bob walking at Fort McHenry or Patapsco Valley Park where his love of nature was evident.

Bob is survived by the love of his life, Roberta “Cookie” Hatfield, loving daughter Jan Van Houten and husband John, devoted son Robert Hatfield and wife Sue, two brothers, Richard Hatfield and wife Barbara, and John “Nick” Wicklein and wife Anna, one sister, Susan Green, and two stepgrandchildren, Melanie Bialousz and husband Reed and Jack Van Houten and wife Stefania.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the caring, compassionate staff at Future Care Chesapeake, where Dad spent his last two years; most especially his nurses with whom he shared many life memories.

With respect to Bob’s wishes, no service will be held. In memory of Bob, contributions can be made to the Friends of Fort McHenry National Shrine (click HERE) or Friends of Fort McHenry, Attn: Patty Dowd, Director, 2400 East Fort Avenue, Baltimore MD 21230.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
