Joseph William Saunders Jr., 72 of Pasadena, Maryland, entered into eternal rest on March 6, 2026, with his daughter Nicoll by his side at Carroll Hospital, Westminster. Affectionately known to many as "Farmer Joe" or "Tractor Joe," he was born at home in Hurlock, Maryland, on June 30, 1953. Joe was a cherished son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, whose presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The son of the late Joseph William Saunders Sr. and Mary Catherine (Linsenmeyer) Saunders, Joe was deeply grounded in family values and community spirit. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Edward Saunders (Teresa) and Jimmy Saunders, and brother-in-law, Bill Topper.
A skilled heavy equipment operator, Joe worked with dedication and pride at Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, but it was his love for tractors, gardening, and reading educational books that truly defined him. Joe was known for sharing the bounty of his garden with friends and neighbors, as well as his fondness for spending time at "The Office." His intelligence, resilience, and the impressive beard that framed his ever-present smile were some of his distinguishing features.
Joe Saunders Jr. was a man who lived life on his own terms, known far and wide for his ability to make friends easily and his willingness to help anyone in need. He possessed a warmth and light-hearted nature that enriched the lives of those around him.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Nicoll Duarte, and son-in-law, Antonio, of Connecticut. He leaves behind two treasured grandchildren, Matteo and Molly Duarte, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and curiosity. Joe’s memory will also be cherished by his siblings: Robert Saunders (Diane) of Taneytown, MD, Mary Jenkins (Wade) of Westminster, MD, Joan Feister (Larry) of Taneytown, MD, Peggy Topper of Westminster, MD, John Saunders (Debbie) of Westminster, MD, and George Saunders (Theresa) of Pasadena, MD. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a great-uncle to their children.
Joe’s family will welcome visitors for an afternoon visitation at Stallings Funeral Home in Pasadena, Maryland, on Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with a memorial service starting at 3:30 pm to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to the funeral home to assist with funeral costs, or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital by clicking HERE, reflecting Joe’s generous spirit and commitment to helping others.
