John W. Ports,
John Wayne Ports, beloved husband of Caryl Ports and father of Cheryl Sidwell and Michele Hamilton, passed away on April 16, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, and daughters.
John grew up in Baltimore, MD where he graduated from Merganthaler Vocational and Technical High School (MERVO), married his sweetheart Caryl, and purchased his first home. Eventually, he moved his family to Pasadena, MD where, with help from his friends, he built the house in which he and Caryl raised their two daughters. He took great pride in providing for his family and enabling both his daughters to attend college.
John worked for Baltimore Gas & Electric Company for over 30 years. He was especially proud of his service in the U.S. Navy. He enlisted after graduating high school and served active duty on the U.S.S. Boxer. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserves throughout the following decades. He formed lasting friendships in the Navy and a lifelong love for ships and the ocean.
John was a man of initiative, determination and many talents. He was a trained automotive technician and a licensed engineer. He loved his dogs, vegetable gardening, camping with his family, working on cars an socializing with his friends. He Distinguished himself through his involvement and leadership in community organizations including the Stoney Creek Democratic Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Friends may call Sunday, May 5th from 3-5 pm at Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122 where a service will begin Monday, May 6th at 10 am. Interment will take place immediately after services at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.
