John Johnson, Sr. Obituary

In Loving Memory of John Joseph Johnson Sr.

If you ever had the privilege of meeting John Joseph Johnson Sr., you understood the kind of life force he was. He was the life of the party, the first to make you laugh, and the kind of person who could make a stranger feel like family. While his sense of humor—shaped by his days in 1970s stand-up comedy—could be a little mischievous at times, it was always genuine, kind-hearted, and rooted in making others smile.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Joseph Johnson Sr., who passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2026, at the age of 64.

Born to William Johnson and Virginia Johnson, John lived a life centered around faith, family, laughter, and selfless love. A devoted member of Our Lady of the Chesapeake, his faith was evident not only in what he believed but in the way he loved and cared for others.

The day John learned he was going to become a father to Courtney, his life changed forever. He stepped away from his career and embraced what would become his greatest role—that of a stay-at-home dad. Though it wasn't the path he had planned, it became the calling that defined his life. He was the very best at playing Barbies, always knew exactly which Barney episode would make everything better, and created a childhood filled with laughter, imagination, and unconditional love.

While he wore many hats throughout his life—coach, comedian, devoted husband, proud cat and dog dad, beloved part-time Santa Claus, and friend—the role he cherished most was simply being "Mr. Mom." He wasn't just a father to his own children; he became a father figure to anyone who needed one, always ready with a joke, a helping hand, or a listening ear. He gave of himself without hesitation, and the love he poured into others is a legacy that will live on forever.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years Joan (Downey) Johnson; his children, Courtney Prager (Jake Prager), Caitlyn Johnson (Austin Hunter), and John Johnson Jr; and his siblings Bill Johnson, Vickie Schwant, and Lou Ellen Britt. As well as many nieces and nephews, dear friends, neighbors, former players, Luna, Zeus, Binx, and all those fortunate enough to have known his kindness and generous spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Johnson and Virginia Johnson.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate John's life during a visitation at Stallings Funeral Home in Pasadena, Maryland, on Saturday, July 11, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m with a funeral service starting at 7 pm.

Those who wish to continue honoring John's memory are invited to join the family for the 10:45 a.m. regularly scheduled service at Our Lady of the Chesapeake in Pasadena on Sunday, July 12.

Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that John's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. His laughter, compassion, and unwavering love will continue to guide us every day.

To his family, he wasn't simply Dad—he was our safe place, our biggest supporter, our comedian, our coach, and our "Mr. Mom."

Dad, thank you for every sacrifice you made, every laugh you shared, every game you played, and every person you welcomed as family. We will think of you every day. We know you are surrounded by endless love; we’ll all be right behind you someday—you won't have to miss us for long.

Until we meet again, your love will live on in our hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in John's memory to the Make-A-Wish Foundation by clicking HERE. Your generosity will help bring hope and joy to children facing critical illnesses, honoring John's legacy of kindness and compassion.
