Donald Norlie Obituary

Donald Gene Norlie, a beloved father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the age of 92, at Morningside House of Friendship in Hanover, MD. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 12, 1933, Donald's life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country.

Donald served proudly in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne. He was a radar specialist stationed stateside from 1951 to 1955. Continuing his service in the Army Reserves, he was honorably discharged in April 1961 after a decade of devotion to his duties, which he cherished greatly, especially his time as part of the honor guard and in parade marches.

A gifted craftsman, Donald pursued a fulfilling career as a tool maker, achieving the esteemed rank of the highest level tool in the industry. He dedicated 28 years to Frankford Arsenal, contributing to his community until its closure. Donald then transitioned to A.M. Gatti, where he innovated in developing prototype fixtures for cutting-edge gem laser fitting and cutting machine technology. He continued there until his retirement.

Donald was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 754, actively participating  in various roles across the Philadelphia area. His love for service extended into volunteerism with Partners-in-Care in Maryland, before eventually enjoying the opportunities to travel with the Pascal Senior Center.

He married his beloved wife, Helen Ruth Norlie, in 1955, with whom he shared a life rich in adventure, family, and love until her passing. They resided in Feasterville, Pennsylvania for 32 years before relocating to Glen Burnie, where Donald spent 29 years surrounding himself with the love of his family.

Donald will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind, including his loving daughter, Susan Tomlinson and her husband, Terence of Glen Burnie, MD; his grandson, Mitchell Tomlinson; and granddaughter, Kathryn Tomlinson. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Milton O. Norlie and Bertha Norlie, as well as his beloved wife, Helen Ruth Norlie.

Apart from his vocational achievements and military service, Donald was passionate about the outdoors, camping, hunting, and spending time with the Girl Scouts of Freedom in Valley, PA, where he was a leader and camp team member for 15 years. In his leisure, he enjoyed yard work, tinkering in his workroom, and quietly observing the clouds.

A graveside service celebrating Donald’s remarkable life will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Pennsylvania on Monday, March 31st, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The family will receive visitors to his daughters home on Sunday, March 30th between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 pm. at 1426 Gordon Drive, Glen Burnie,
