The Reverend Ernest Robert Twigg of Pasadena, Maryland died on July 29, 2012. He was born on August 24, 1924 in Mt. Savage, Maryland and graduated from Mt. Savage High School in 1943. Subsequently, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He attended Western Maryland College where he met and married Gladys Schlag of Baltimore. He and Gladys both received their Master’s Degrees at Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While in Chicago, Rev. Twigg rescued a U.S. Navy pilot from a crash in Lake Michigan using a handmade kayak.
Upon graduation from Seminary, Ernest was ordained by the Baltimore Methodist Conference and assigned to Magothy Methodist Church in Pasadena, Maryland in 1952 as pastor. Rev. Twigg served for 13 years at Magothy and was instrumental in creating an outdoor chapel and an educational building for the needs of the growing church. Subsequently, he served the Conference at the Perry Hall United Methodist, Wesley Grove United Methodist, and Davidsonville United Methodist churches. Following his retirement from the Conference, Rev. Twigg continued to feel a calling to minister and founded Christ and a Better Way Fellowship, a church that met in Riva, Maryland for many years until blindness forced him to cease giving services.
Coming from the mountains of western Maryland to the Chesapeake Bay area introduced Rev. Twigg to the pleasures of sailing and fishing. In addition, he had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed playing the guitar. Rev. Twigg’s ministry was marked by hundreds of marriages, baptisms, and funerals, at which he officiated with great feeling and articulation. Rev. Twigg was known for his care of the sick and infirm.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years. He is survived by his brother William Paul Twigg of Millersville, Maryland, his daughter Linda Fuller Silver of Newport News, Virginia, two sons, Daniel Ernest Twigg of Pasadena, Maryland and Douglas Robert Twigg of Annapolis, Maryland, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours at Stallings Funeral Home in Pasadena are on Thursday, August 2 at 3:00-5:00 p.m and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bible Church of Lake Shore, 860 Swift Rd.,Pasadena, MD, 21122. Memorial contributions may be made to Bible Church of Lake Shore.
